Blog Entry #5: Literary Elements

Setting: The setting is the time and place in which a story takes place. The setting of the story that I chose takes place in an underground anti-nuclear compound in the early 2000's.

Tone: The tone of a story is the author's attitude toward the story. The tone of the compound is a mixture between frustration and depression. The reason for this is that the characters don't want anything more in life that to get out of the compound and live normal lives again.

Theme: The theme of a story is the overall central idea that the story is trying to portray. The theme of the story that I read is that you should be thankful of what you have and that you are living and healthy, no matter how bad things seem to be. An example of this was that the children in the compound were not appreciative of the things that their father had done for them. They weren't thankful that he had set up a compound that they couldn't live in and survive in in case nuclear war broke out.

Antagonist: The antagonist in a story is the enemy or foe who is trying to stop the progression of the protagonist. The antagonist in my story was the father because he lied to the whole family that there was a nuclear war going on and that they had to stay in the compound for the next 15 years. He was a little crazy in the head so there wasn't really anything good that he was doing for the family, the compound was pointless because there was never actually a nuclear war.

Imagery: An author uses imagery in their story to describe what they are talking about more than words can. In my story, the Turducken (which is a food that Eli's father makes every Christmas that is composed of duck, turkey, and chicken) is described by Eli using imagery because Eli was having food cravings and he couldn't stop thinking about the Turducken. The description that Eli used was very descriptive in helping you visualize what he was talking about.

Blog Entry #3 Musical Composition

This piece of music is written and performed by Christopher Gluck and Elizabeth Woo. I chose this piece of music because it has a sad tone to it which is the tone of the setting in the book, "The Compound". The characters inside the book feel that they will never be granted the ability to see the outside world ever again. This piece sets an exact tone of the setting in the book. The character, Eli, would give anything to be released from the compound to see his brother. He knows that is impossible since his brother is dead, or so he thinks. The other family members are feeling what Eli is feelings but they don't show it. Eli shows his form of depression by growing is hair really long and letting it dangle over his eyes.

There is lots of mixed feelings within the characters. Eli never had a father who played ball with him or even have a little conversation with him. His own father wanted to keep him and his family imprisoned in a place of sorrow. Eli and the other family members didn't know what to think when they had escaped and their dad went back inside the compound that exploded just shortly after he retreated back inside. I believe that this piece contains an appropriate tone for this story.
